Frequently Asked Questions

What is BS 8555?

BS 8555 is a British standard recognised throughout the UK and Ireland and is in fact a combination of three standards: ISO 14001, EMAS and elements of ISO 14031. Bright Green Business recognised that 99% of organizations are never likely to implement or require ISO 14001 as it is ei- ther not suitable or far too expensive. As a result we developed the UKAS accredited Green Ticks scheme and in combination with BS 8555 the scheme improves on many or the perceived weaknesses of 14001, es- pecially with the inclusion of performance indicators and monitoring from ISO 14031.

How do the Ticks /Phases work?

BS 8555 is split into 6 separate phases. You choose whether you wish to use Green Ticks as a staged approach to reach other EMS standards such as ISO 14001 or EMAS or (as many do) apply for registration at a phase that is appropriate to the nature and scale of your business and remain at that phase. In fact, the requirements of Phase 5 and 6 exceed the requirements of ISO 14001. As long as you pass an annual Inspection you can remain at that particular phase indefinitely and use your EMS to demonstrate to stakeholders and customers your commitment to envi- ronmental management.

How do I decide what Phase / Ticks to apply for?

We can bring you up to the standards required for the initial Phase / Ticks that you select and help you maintain the system in subsequent years.
